<image:caption>My ASSIST year has certainly been one of the most memorable and pivotal ones of my life. I remember arriving at Logan airport for the orientation program not knowing what to expect. My arrival was quite untimely; 3 days later I would have to fly to Estonia to compete at a Taekwondo World Championship. A week after, I said an emotional goodbye to my father at the Talin airport from which I departed for the U.S. once again for the start of my year at Deerfield Academy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I have many abiding memories tied to ASSIST. Among them: Meeting Betsy and Ken Lindfors for the first time, in company with Jack Tyrer, in the early 90's. Then, years later, serving on the search committee that brought Bob and Anne Stanley to lead, serve, and love ASSIST. Jack, who had been my headmaster for a decade as I grew as teacher, coach, and then director at The Asheville School, was central to both events as chairman of ASSIST's board.</image:caption>

Then, I was a 16-year-old girl experiencing the U.S. for the first time, amazed by everything and everyone around her. Now, I'm a mother of two, with more than 30 visas in my passport. I don't even know where to begin to share the magnitude of the impact that one ASSIST year has had on my life. It was so much more than a one-year cultural and educational experience.</image:caption>

Each of those students have fit wonderfully into life at our midwestern boarding school. For most, the takeaways and benefits are familiar and expected—wonderful memories, but pretty "standard stuff" when considering the high level of young people who have come to Wayland through ASSIST over the years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I joined the ASSIST Board about 1980. Paul Sanderson, ASSIST's founder, had a dream to unite German and American students following the two World Wars. Paul’s dream was well-developed; the funds needed to support his enterprise were not. A board of directors was formed to raise money and increase the number of secondary schools willing to offer full financial aid to bright German students. There was a lot of heated discussion, but all based on a common goal: figuring out how to make ASSIST work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To a four-year-old kid in a refugee camp in a desert, nothing is more important than playing in the sand with his friends. I was just that kid, until my aunt had told me about our eminent relocation to Hargeisa. “Things have become normal in Hargeisa Hadhwanaag (the city with the great shade), and we can now go home and lead a normal life,” she told me. While “normal” did not have much of a meaning in my vocabulary at the time, my instinct knew that my life at the camp was far from normal, and I was elated by the possibility of moving to Hargeisa and enjoying the great shades of its trees.</image:caption>

It followed a vigorous day of interviews at the Amerika Haus, where we were absorbed in meeting myriad impressive students. We had already anticipated that the scholarship choices would be difficult, as there were so many multi-lingual, musically talented, and athletically strong German students.</image:caption>

For those unfamiliar with the term, it is essentially a year-off between high school and university during which many Australians would travel to and/or work in the UK. Almost thirty years later, my mum still explains the rationale for my GAP year as "George was too young for his class and needed to grow up!”</image:caption>

That was the beginning of an amazing journey. Whenever I'm about to begin a new chapter in life, I still hear myself repeating that sentence internally.</image:caption>

Listening to him explain his dream of building an organization that might make world politics more rational and relation-ship based convinced me. I wanted to support his vision. Sandy’s big picture, win-win approach was both innocent and compelling, unencumbered by all the objections and warnings that could have derailed such a plan in the midst of all the financial challenges private schools faced in the 1970’s. Sandy was the perfect architect and marketer for this exciting new concept he called ASSIST.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My ASSIST adventure began thirty-five years ago this fall, when I arrived at the Orme School in Arizona. Located in the desert, off the interstate between Phoenix and Flagstaff and four miles down an unpaved cattle trail, the place could not have been more different from my teenage life in a leafy suburb on the River Rhine in Duesseldorf, Germany. At Orme, some students wore cowboy hats. Rodeo was a school sport. My U.S. History class was held in an old adobe building, once the schoolhouse for kids from surrounding ranches.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It has just occurred to me, as I sit here recollecting my memories of ASSIST for its 50th Anniversary, that I am at the same age – I just turned 50. A rather interesting oversight on my part, I thought, that I failed to realize the coincidence until now. It is probably because we celebrate the 50th of an organization as a crowning achievement with unbridled pride and joy, while we tend to look back on our lives as individuals at the 50th with a melancholic taste of the bittersweet. There is an old Chinese saying, “The 50th birthday is the time to know your fate.” To me, this is a journey as much about getting to know the world as about getting to know myself. And as fate would have it, it started with ASSIST.</image:caption>

Not the grim Grimm Brothers version of the legend in which the magical, patchwork piper marches the children off to their doom, but a happy story in which the fantastic flautist spirits the kids away on a wonderful life-changing adventure. One thing for sure: it was always magic. I would set up a plethora of important meetings, they would all fall through, and new and better meetings would somehow always materialize.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Joanna Martyni-Orenowicz P '11, P '15, Country Coordinator "The situation is very tense. I delivered many goods to be distributed among those in need from Ukraine. The woman who used to care for my mother is Ukrainian. She now works for a different family, but we have stayed in touch. She is having very hard time as her son who was working in a Polish factory for 2 years decided to go back and fight for his country. I comfort her as much as I can and hope he survives in good shape. It is a nightmare for each and every mother."</image:caption>
